Buyer's Real Estate Agent

Blog by Matt Carre | August 23rd, 2011

I often run into buyer’s (usually first timers) that have the misconception that they have to contact the Listing Agent (the name on the sign) for each home they are interested in, in order to book a showing. This is not the case.

When you list your home you want to make sure you hire a REALTOR® you trust and whom you feel comfortable with because they are going to be selling your largest asset.  The same applies when you are buying.  This is a huge purchase whether it’s your first house or 50th.  You want to know who you are working with and you want to know that they are going to represent you well in the transaction.  You also want them to know you.  If  my buyer tells me they have a 5 piece bedroom set, I’m going to be looking to see if it can fit in every master bedroom we look at.  I’m also going to be watching for body language and what they describe as “good” or “bad” in each home.  Sometimes it’s difficult for a buyer to really articulate what is important to them but they can point it out if they see it (or don’t see it).

I’m taking all of that information in so that when I go through listings I have a good idea of which ones they might like to see.  If you are just starting your search you might call a couple of different REALTORs® to view different listings.  You can use this time with them to see how they work and “interview” them.  If you click with them, then you can start building a relationship but if you don’t, walk away.  You might also have heard of a few REALTORs® that you may want to work with.  Don’t feel silly calling them to meet and have a coffee.  Ultimately you want to work with someone that is knowledgeable and that you like, from there you will build the trust.
