Got Fuzzy Fridge Friends?

Blog by Matt Carre | March 26th, 2014

Despite the non-spring weather, it's time to start spring cleaning.  Since you can't do much outside let's start inside, with your fridge!  Yep, it's time to find out what's been causing that stinky stench, throw out Christmas leftovers and wipe up the spilled juice (from a month ago).  Okay, I won't assume everyone is a contender for an episode of Hoarders but even the cleanest people find fuzzy friends in their fridge.

The other day I made my fridge my Bi.., project.  I did a top down strategy, my theory being anything I wipe off one shelf would fall down to the next and get wiped off shortly.  As I wiped down each shelf I took everything out, checked the expiry dates, looked for any fuzzy friends and decided if I couldn't indentify when it was put it then it was time to go.  We have already received our Organics bin so I took the opportunity to start filling it with nastiness from the fridge.

Once the shelves were cleaned I replaced the food that got through the stringent quality control tests in a nice order so we could see what was in there.  Next I tackled the door.  After readjusting the shelves and wiping them down I organized the half dozen BBQ sauces and other random sauces.  I also took the oppotunity to toss out a zillion packages of soy sauce, ketchup and sweet and sour sauce.  I mean really, how many of those do you need?

After my trimphant clean out of the fridge I took a day off to regain my strength and then tackled the freezer.  It was easier than I thought.  The good news is that the freezer is smaller.  I set up an area for meat, frozen fruit and the rest in the middle.  There were only a couple of food fatalities from the freezer but it gave me the space so I was able to see everything we have and actually use it!

If you tackle your fridge I'd love to hear your war stories.  Did you make it through?  Any fuzzy friends of your own?
