Stop Planning!

Blog by Matt Carre | March 19th, 2014

Hey you, ya you with the clip board and the spreadsheet and the mental floor plans.  Stop it!  Now if you know me at all you might be thinking "isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?".  Yeah, it is but only sort of...

I'll be honest, I love a spreadsheet, visualizing is a passtime and nothing makes my world feel more calm than a good list (especially one that is all checked off).  All that being said though, I do need to be reminded that sometimes my overplanning becomes a block to moving forward.  Sometimes you can get so fixated on the path ahead and what you are going to see and do that you don't realize you are stuck in the mud.

This is so important to remember when it comes to buying or selling a home.  It's a well known suggestion to not put the cart before the horse, so let's take that advice.  Stop worrying about where you will go when your house sells, or how much you will get in your pocket at the end of the day or what time of year you will be moving.  I'm not suggesting to disregard these thoughts all together, just don't get fixated on them.  It's a great idea to have your REALTOR® set up a search for your new home and sometimes it's even a good idea to get out there and get your feet wet.  If you find the perfect house though, don't start arranging the furniture in your head and planning the move if you don't even have an offer on your current house.  It's a good idea to sit down and talk about the costs of selling or buying a home with your REALTOR® too but you have to understand that the number is a moving target that depends on how much your home sells for or costs.

Have a rough plan for the future but understand that is may change.  Focus on what you know for sure right now and take action and make decisions based on that.  When you have a REALTOR® you can look to them for advice that is based on their experience in the industry and their knowledge of the market to help you make decisions.
