Yes, You Should Decorate For The Holidays!

Blog by Matt Carre | December 12th, 2012

I love Christmas, it's my favourite time of the year.  I love the food (especially the desserts), the family and friends and giving gifts.  I also really love the decor of the season.  I remember one Christmas we were only at home for a few days in December so we didn't go all out decorating the house but I needed something to give me a sense of Christmas so we bought a little tree and wraped a string of lights around it.  It wasn't the same as every other year but it was something.  I could not imagine doing nothing and going the whole season with the house looking the same way it does the other 11 months of the year and that's why I will never tell my Clients to do that either.

I often get the question "should we decorate for Christmas" when I have a home listed over the holidays and my answer is always a yes.  I've said it before and I will say it again, you should still be able to live in your home while it's on the market.  Celebrating the holidays, whether is Christmas, Hanakah or something else is part of many peoples lives and I don't think it should be put on hold.

When you are hauling out all of your Christmas decor it can also be a good time to edit what you don't like or use anymore.  Perhaps you have ornaments that are falling apart or a dish you no longer like.  If these items are still in good repair you can donate them to a local charity.  The only thing I suggest is to be mindful of adding too much to your home.  Instead of adding to your decor consider replacing it with your holiday stuff and storing the regular decor items.

I would like to suggest that most people like seeing homes decorated for the holidays.  It adds a lot of warmth and it can really get people to picture themselves in a home at a specific time which can create a greater connection than just imagining their couch in the living room.

So bake your cookies, hang your lights and put up that tree and enjoy the Christmas Season the way your family traditionally does.

I'd love to hear what your family traditions are so share them below in the comments section.
