Let There Be Light

Blog by Matt Carre | November 15th, 2012

I have probably spent close to an hour and half changing light bulbs and cleaning light fixtures in the last few days and it reminded me of how important it is to do that simple job.

When I show Clients a home I turn on all the lights as we make our way through.  Obviously it allows us to see the room better, especially now that it gets dark at 5:00 but for some people lighting is very important.  Burnt out bulbs can give the buyer the impression that the home isn’t well taken care of.  It can also make them feel uncomfortable if a room is dark.  Do you like walking through a dark room you’ve never been in?  Kinda creepy....

According to Feng Shui having a burnt out bulb is reflective of a “dimmed out” financial future.  I think it’s safe to say that no one wants that when they are selling their house.

Here are 3 steps to make the process of changing bulbs simple.:

1.) Take a walk through your house and make a list of what is burnt out.  To take it a step further, unscrew the burnt out bulb and take it to the store with you or write down the type and wattage.  If you have a list it will be a lot easier to ensure you get what you need.  In my case I have a couple of lights with weird bulbs so I just take the burnt out ones directly to Trudy at Exciting Lighting and she finds the ones I need.  Simple and easy.

2.) Once you are back at home get yourself set up.  Get a ladder if you need it and move items out the way.  This is really important in the kitchen.  We have pot lights so I have to take them out of the ceiling to change the bulb, this means that some of the ceiling inevitably sprinkles down and I don’t want that in my food or on clean dishes.

3.) Finally take this opportunity to clean the light fixture.  Whether you dust it, or wash out the bug graveyard it make a difference.  After all, what good is a new light bulb if the light can’t get through all the dust and grime?

One last request, if your home is for sale and there is a showing in the evening, please turn on the outside light.  It makes it a lot easier for me to get the door unlocked and if my Clients are waiting in the cold while I attempt to open the door in the dark it does not give a good first impression of the house.
