Personal Photos - A Do or A Don't?

Blog by Matt Carre | January 23rd, 2012

I often hear people say that they were told to take down all of their personal photos when staging their home.  I don’t agree!  If I took down all of my personal photos there would be next to nothing left.  You may need to pare down the number of photos you have displayed or edit out some that are “distracting”.  Buyers will look at your photos so you don’t want to have ones that they will spend too much time staring at and not enough time looking at the actual house.

I strongly believe that you still need to be able to live in your home when it’s listed.  We like to surround ourselves with photos of our family and friends.  It’s a way to instantly relive a great moment from our past and when you are going through a move sometimes it’s nice to have those memories close by.

If you do take down any pictures that are hung on the wall you will need to consider the blank wall left behind.  If the picture has been there for many years you may need to repaint the wall if there is a light spot where the picture was.  If the one photo was hiding several nail holes you may need to fill them and touch up the paint.

Just remember, a photo is a decorative element and when staging your home the goal is to make it appealing to as many potential buyers as possible.
